eWon eCatcher Mobile App on New Mac
Hello,
I am hoping to run the eWon eCatcher Mobile app on the new M1 Macbook. The new Macbook allows for download of ios apps. I was trying to download the eCatcher mobile app and received the following error message:
The mobile app will ideally allow me to access eWons on my Macbook without needing to use a virtual machine.

You will have to check with Apple on this. The error message indicates that the device has been jailbroken and the error is coming from the Mac, no necessarily due to the app.
In the meantime, on this device you can access your Ewons at m2web.talk2m.com.

Hi Kyle,
Thanks, I will look into it on the Apple side. It is a new MacBook(has not been jailbroken) and that message has not been shown for other apps. I appreciate you sending over the URL!

Hi Kyle,
Can I use the URL you sent me to VPN into the devices? I was under the impression that the link you sent me only allows access to the Web Dashboard, and does not provide a VPN into the system.

It does not create a VPN connection. It allows access to the Ewon web interface as well as HTTP, VNC, and RDP services for devices on the LAN.
I will check to see if the developers have seen that error, but it doesn't look like it's coming from our App. Some Apps can be installed on jailbroken devices and some can't, which is probably why other Apps don't cause the error.

Developers had same answer and recommended asking Apple about the error.

Hi, I have same issue on Apple M1
App downloaded from Appstore.0 -
Have you had any other apps give this error? Can you try to install another app, like the one below and see if you get that error?

I have reported the issue to the eCatcher development team again to take a look at this.

I have some additional information on this topic, as I too, get the same error.
As I understand it, only M1 Chipset Macs can run applications built for iOS on iPhone and/or iPad. These iOS apps are made available for install, directly on the App Store now, in a separate column for iPhone/iPad.
I have a copy of the crash report I can send, but due to the content, I'm not sharing it publicly, on the forum, until I review all the contents.

It has to do with the eWON eCatcher Mobile App's detection of the device it is installed on. It has to be set up differently after iOS14 and the release of the M1 Mac Chipsets. As authorized iOS developers, your App Development Team should have access to the specifics of the above, within Apple' Developer Documentation for iOS 14 and M1 Chipset Macs.

From my MacBook Pro 16" 2021 w/ M1 Max Chipset, the above are screenshots of the App Store when searching for "ecatcher" - you should notice two different tabs. The first tab is for MacOS Native Apps. The second tab is for iPhone & iPad Native Apps that "work" with M1 Macs.
My understanding is that if a iOS App developer doesn't want their iOS Native App to show up in that list, there is some specific code/flag they have to put in their app. Otherwise, Apple's App Store assumes it should be fully compatible with M1 Macs.
There is also a bit of code in iOS Apps that detect what Device/Device OS it is being installed/run on. AS I mentioned above, this section of code, within the eCatcher App, needs updated to be in line with the iOS 14/M1 Mac specific detection process.
I know the eWON eCatcher Mobile app is actively developed and updated, but this information must have missed the desks of the development team, when iOS 14 & the M1 Macs came out.
FYI: There are other iOS Native Apps that have or have had this same issue. Most of the developers have resolved it though. The RSA iOS App for instance, had this issue back in the first part of 2021. I understand it has been fixed since then.
I have an iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (5th generation) running iOS 15.5 and it does not have this issue.
I also have an iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 15.5 and it does not have this issue.
When I get home from the office, I can test my MacBook Pro (15-inch) 2017 and see if it can even see the iOS App in the App Store. I don't believe it should be able to.

Hi @WebDevRobert,
Thank you for the info! I had thought this issue had been fixed already, but I could be wrong. Did you check to make sure you have the latest version released last month (2.0.3)?
I will send a message to the Ewon team to get a status update on the issue and let you know when I have more info.
Thanks again!
Kyle

Looking into it further, it appears it was due to a library used by the app, which should be updated now according to this: Fix false positive on Mac M1 by urielvexi · Pull Request #16 · thii/DTTJailbreakDetection · GitHub
I will check to make sure the app is using the new library.

It is either not using the new library or the new library did not fix it.

I imagine it's the former and it couldn't be included in the June release for some reason, but I'm not positive. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. I will let them know so we can be sure that it will be fixed in the upcoming release.
Thanks!

In case it helps, I've attached a screenshot of my "About This Mac" and yes, I masked the serial number.
I'm using MacOS 12.5

Hi Robert,
I just wanted to let you know that I am planning to meet with the Ewon engineers next week and we will discuss this issue. I'll let you know what the plan is then.
Best Regards,
Kyle

Any update on this? One of your eWon partners is dependent on the eWon to provide the service we subscribed to. Without Mac support, their service is of no use.
Incidentally, There doesn't appear to be a way to sign up for the eWon eCatcher service on Mac, iPad nor iPhone. Without the ability to register an account, how does one ever log in?

I have reached out to them again for an update on this. I would expect this fix to be implemented in the next version of eCatcher mobile, but I want to confirm that.
At this time, to create an account, you still need to use eCatcher on Windows. I can check to see if there are plans to change this.
Are you telling me that this business does not have access to a Windows PC? I don't think I've ever seen an industrial type business that operates without using Windows! Unfortunately, we have found that there is very little demand for eCatcher on Mac and I'm yet to find a PLC software that runs on Mac.

Ha ha ha: No sir. I am not telling you we do not have "access" to a Windows PC. I am telling you we do not manage any of our IT/OT Network Equipment/Devices from a Windows PC. It is all done from Apple and Linux. It seems quite counter-intuitive to be forced to a Windows PC, simply to sign up for a service that'll never be used on a Windows PC.
Also, IXON supports Apple, Linux and Windows equally. So if eWon's competition is willing to do it, maybe eWon should be thinking about it.

I understand the concern and I have wanted a Linux version for a long time, but I am not a developer, I can only pass this along and hope they will invest in it. They need to see a market demand for the investment to make financial sense, and up until now, 99.99% of our customers were using Windows. We have had customer's looking for Linux compatibility in the past, but up until now, I've only seen Apple used to run Windows VMs, so I'm glad you've brought this to our attention.

Hi @kyle_HMS, I came here since we also have a strong interest in supporting a Mac version. I still also get the initial error message of "this device" having been "jailbroken". I also kindly ask you to remove the "resolved" tag since it hasn't been resolved. Can you please push for a resolution? If the iPad version would work on an M1 it would also relieve some pressure of you to deliver a macOS edition.
Thanks!

Hi Kyle Reynolds I have the same issue as well. It works with IOS (iPad) but the fails to load in MacOS. I have the latest M2 Mac with the latest OS. Talk2m helps but at times when I need to access the SD cards then to connect to the eCatcher is the only way it seems. If you can suggest any alternative solution to this that is possible in Mac will be of great help.
Thanks!

Did anyone get somewhere with this? Half my team is on Mac and we need to be able to VPN in for testing and troubleshooting. It sounds like the web version does not support VPN? I am on an M1. Things like Ignition are cross-platform, which do run at site. More companies are writing software that interfaces with controls networks, have IPCs running linux, or things like that.
Please either make a Mac (and Linux!) client or somehow make the mobile one work on Mac. It has been years, but I have seen the web-based VPNs work before too, but that may no longer be a thing due to browser security. If they are still possible, that is another option.
M1s are ARM based, so even if we were forced to use a Windows VM, it would still be the Windows ARM edition. Is there a way to connect to the VPN with my android phone or iPad and piggyback off of it through hotspot and maybe some tunneling? It has been a long time since I have had to "work around" this sort of thing, and I don't remember the specifics.
I am getting the error below.

You may want to post on the Ewon Developers Forum which is managed by the Ewon developers: Ewon Technical Forum
We have to forward this information to them, which we have already done.
The Ewon device itself is a Linux device. The problem is the client to interface with the Talk2M platform. We have the Windows version of eCatcher, and the mobile versions for iOS and Android only. There is not a lot of market demand for a Mac version.
I am surprised you are still getting this error as it should have been fixed a long time ago. I will report it again.
You can run eCatcher on an ARM PC, but you have to manually install the ARM version of OpenVPN: How to run eCatcher on ARM-based computers – HMS Support Portal (hms-networks.com)
